A big thank you to the Victorian Planning and Environmental Law Association (VPELA) for inviting me to be part of their 2023 conference: Celebrating the Future with Diversity and Inclusion. Definitely also a big thank you to my fellow panelists, Peter Malley and Nick Morris, and the Panel Chair, Kate Stapleton, for making the session such a resounding success. My contribution on 'Models of Disability' was drawn from my PhD work, Nick's contribution around Universal Design was informed by both his professional expertise as an Access Consultant and his personal experience as a long-term manual wheelchair user and Paralympian, while Peter's recent experience of becoming a wheelchair user having to deal with the realities of built environment inaccessibility, particularly in the housing space, has deepened his professional expertise and interests. Kate's ability to engage attendees and use of SLIDO further increased the value of the session. Once again, thankyou all!

Ageing in place is not 'set and forget', the soft infrastructure of social networks is required along with the hard infrastructure of accessible built environments.

Spotted while out and about recently. The 'big scale' of path, shelter, and seat provided. BUT, the 'small detail' of the shelter design/ orientation has compromised path accessibility.

Accessible communication is a must, but is not necessarily quick or easy! I was recently reminded of this in my PhD fieldwork. Talking in-the-moment to someone onsite about the built environment barriers being faced is very different from expecting that person to comfortably read and give written feedback on the (long-winded) research report prepared after the event.
